Does Acupuncture Hurt?

One of the most common questions people ask before trying acupuncture is:

“Does acupuncture hurt?”

Because acupuncture involves the use of very fine needles, it is natural for people to feel a little nervous before their first treatment. Many people associate needles with injections or blood tests, which can sometimes be uncomfortable.

However, acupuncture needles are extremely thin and designed to minimise discomfort. As a result, most patients are surprised to find that acupuncture is usually very comfortable and often deeply relaxing. Many people feel little to nothing when the needles are inserted and begin to relax as the treatment progresses.

Are Acupuncture Needles Painful?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, much thinner than the needles used for injections or blood tests.

In fact, several acupuncture needles can fit inside the tip of a typical medical injection needle.

Because of this, many patients feel little to no pain when the needles are inserted.

Some people may feel:

  • A tiny pinprick sensation

  • Mild warmth

  • A dull or heavy feeling around the needle

  • A slight tingling sensation

These sensations are usually brief and mild.

What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Many patients describe acupuncture as a mild and unusual sensation rather than pain.

You may feel:

  • A dull ache around the needle

  • A gentle tingling sensation

  • Warmth in the treated area

  • A feeling of heaviness or muscle release

These sensations are normal and are often referred to as “De Qi”, a response that practitioners look for during treatment.

For most people, these sensations fade quickly and are followed by a feeling of relaxation and reduced muscle tension.

Why Do Acupuncture Needles Feel Different?

Acupuncture needles are designed very differently from injection needles.

Injection needles are hollow and designed to deliver medication, which is why they can feel uncomfortable.

Acupuncture needles are solid and extremely fine, allowing them to enter the skin with minimal sensation.

Practitioners are also trained to insert needles carefully and gently, helping to keep treatment comfortable.

Are Some Areas More Sensitive?

Certain areas of the body may be slightly more sensitive than others, especially if the muscles are tight or irritated.

However, discomfort is usually minimal and temporary. Your practitioner can also adjust the technique to keep you comfortable during the session.
